The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, has a rich history that dates back to the Warring States period (475-221 BC) in China. It is primarily celebrated in memory of the ancient Chinese poet and statesman Qu Yuan, who is believed to have drowned himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. According to legend, the people living in the area raced their boats out onto the river in a desperate attempt to rescue him. Since then, the Dragon Boat Festival has become a traditional holiday that commemorates Qu Yuan's loyalty and sacrifice.

The festival is also connected to the mythical dragon, as the boats used in the races are often decorated with dragon motifs. There are various explanations for this, with one being that the dragon is a symbol of good fortune and is believed to ward off evil spirits.
In addition to the boat races, the Dragon Boat Festival is characterized by other customs and traditions, such as eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings), wearing perfume bags, and hanging calamus leaves and mugwort to ward off illness.
