**Origins:**

The festival commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a loyal minister who drowned himself in the Miluo River after being betrayed and wronged by the king. Local people raced boats to save him and threw rice dumplings into the river to feed the fish, preventing them from attacking Qu Yuan's body.

**Folk Customs:**

1. **Dragon Boat Racing:** This is the most prominent activity, where teams of rowers compete in long boats, with a drummer and a flag bearer guiding the way.

2. **Zongzi (Rice Doodles):** These are pyramid-shaped dumplings made of sticky rice and stuffed with various fillings like red bean, egg, or dates. They are often wrapped in bamboo leaves and boiled.

3. **Packing Chrysanthemum Flowers:** It is believed that eating chrysanthemum flowers during the festival can prevent illness.

4. **Wearing Periwinkle (May) Leaves:** People often wear the leaves to ward off evil spirits and diseases.

5. **Wearing Incense Sachets:** These are small bags filled with aromatic herbs and flowers, believed to bring good fortune and ward off illness.

6. **Eating Salted Eggs:** Another custom is to eat salted eggs, which are preserved in saltwater.

The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time to honor a historical figure but also a celebration of community and tradition.
