The Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao Festival, has its origins in ancient China. According to legend, it dates back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - 9 AD). It is said that Emperor Wu of Han was visited by a fairy in the form of a nine-tailed fox, who advised him to celebrate the full moon in winter to honor the moon god. From then on, the festival was established to worship the moon god and express gratitude for the harvest.

One popular story about the festival is about the ancient Chinese poet, Chu Yuan. During the Warring States period, Chu Yuan was a loyal minister who tried to reform the government. However, he was betrayed and exiled. On the 15th day of the first lunar month, Chu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River. The people threw rice balls into the river to prevent fish from eating his body. This became the tradition of eating mooncakes during the Lantern Festival.
