**Origin of the Zongzi Custom:**

The custom of eating zongzi dates back to the memory of Qu Yuan, a loyal and patriotic statesman of the Warring States period (475-221 BC). According to legend, Qu Yuan was falsely accused and exiled by his king. In despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River. To keep fish and birds from eating his body, local people threw rice into the river. A poet named Wu Zixu also jumped into the river to save Qu Yuan but drowned as well.

In memory of Qu Yuan, people began to wrap rice in bamboo leaves to prevent it from sinking and floating in the river. They threw these dumplings into the water to feed the fish, which was believed to keep them from attacking Qu Yuan's body. Over time, the act of throwing dumplings into the river evolved into the tradition of eating zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival.

**Customs and Etymology of Zongzi:**

- **Etymology:** The word "zongzi" is derived from the Chinese characters "粽" (zong) and "子" (zi), which literally mean "rice ball" or "rice dumpling."

- **Bamboo Leaves:** The bamboo leaves used for wrapping zongzi are known for their strong, aromatic, and hygienic properties. They also symbolize longevity and purity.

- **Variety of Fillings:** Zongzi can be filled with a variety of ingredients, such as sticky rice, red bean paste, dates, meat, and nuts. The choice of filling can vary by region and family preferences.

- **Cooking Methods:** Zongzi can be steamed, boiled, or even fried. The steamed ones are the most traditional, while the fried ones are often enjoyed as a snack.

**Symbolism and Meanings of Zongzi:**

- **Respect for the Past:** Eating zongzi is a way to honor the memory of Qu Yuan and Wu Zixu and to show respect for traditional values.

- **Longevity and Health:** The bamboo leaves symbolize longevity, and the sticky rice is believed to bring good health and fertility.

- **Unity and Harmony:** The act of making and sharing zongzi with family and friends promotes unity and strengthens family bonds.

In summary, the custom of eating zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival commemorates the sacrifice of Qu Yuan and Wu Zixu, symbolizes respect for tradition, and conveys blessings for longevity and health.
